Learn Glycolysis Through Interactive Practice

Glycolysis is the fundamental metabolic pathway that breaks down glucose into pyruvate, generating ATP and NADH in the process. It is the first stage of cellular respiration and occurs in the cytoplasm of virtually every living cell. Understanding glycolysis is essential for biology and biochemistry students, as it forms the foundation for learning about aerobic respiration, fermentation, gluconeogenesis, and metabolic regulation.

The pathway consists of 10 enzymatic steps divided into two phases. The energy-investment phase (steps 1–5) consumes 2 ATP to phosphorylate and cleave glucose into two molecules of glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate. The energy-payoff phase (steps 6–10) generates 4 ATP and 2 NADH, yielding a net gain of 2 ATP per glucose. Three irreversible steps — catalysed by hexokinase, phosphofructokinase-1 (PFK-1), and pyruvate kinase — serve as the key regulatory control points of the pathway.

This interactive glycolysis game tests your knowledge across three areas: the sequential steps and their substrates, the enzymes and their regulation, and the energy balance and products of the pathway.
